The Use of Questions as a Fantastic Leadership Skill with Bob Tiede
Telling people things allows them to disagree with you. Asking them questions allows you to understand their perspective and allows you to align with their ideas before directing them. Bob Tiede is an author of the book Leading with Questions. He and I discuss the power of questions as a leadership tool.

Why be such a prude? I can definitely tell who never served in the military by the way they act in the locker room. Most of us do not look like an underwear model. One day (sooner than you think) you too will be old. Would you want someone judging your looks? You need to man up and be more considerate of others.

Give me the assignment, tell me the resources I have and the expectation and I'll get it done. I don't need nor do I want your motivation. The thing about GenX is that when our parents said “Adapt and overcome” and “Lead, follow, or get out of the way” and “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem” we listened and took them seriously. Remember those three phrases next time you’re wasting our time in a dragging, off topic meeting. Last hour-long staff meeting I was in included 5 minutes of useful information while I ignored the rest and got 55 minutes of work done. And everyone is constantly amazed at the sheer volume of work I do, its high quality, and its organization, and that the meetings that I run start on time, stay on focus, and end early. Yeah…I’m the problem…according to this Dogbert.

Gen X managers biggest problem is that they can't terminate millennials and gen-z in the work force because HR has essentially hamstrung their abilities to get rid of those who undermine the workplace. You can't just fire anyone for being a total fuck up or lazy ass anymore. You can't get rid of toxic employees who have no people skills and can't work with others. You can't get rid of people who consistently underperform, regardless of how many chances you give him/her. You can't fire anyone who is always clocking in late. These kind of toxic employees put strain on the ones who want to be there and want to work, and THEY'RE the ones who end up leaving to find greener pastures. Management now has to fill in those roles with people who have lousy work ethic or only do the bare minimum.

  • @joeatwood1346

What a load of crap! This isn’t a generational issue; it’s the difference between leadership and management. A leader has a daily/weekly/monthly meeting (any could be an appropriate frequency depending on the job), expeditiously gets inputs, provides direction, resolves problems and dismisses everyone to get back to work, then engages in MBWA ( “management by walking around” ) to spot-check, keep current, praise and correct. A certain degree of social interaction will occur as a good leader gets to know their people one-on-one or in their work groups. A meeting is NOT the place to do this. Everyone hates meetings that drag or lose focus; everyone loves a little personal attention. A manager lingers in meetings attempting to micromanage processes they don’t understand because they never engage in MBWA; instead they spend their time bouncing from meeting to meeting engaging in whatever acronym-festooned attempt to legislate common sense processes the current management fad demands. I have seen good leaders and crap managers amongst people of every generation. This clown is just doing what his generation has done since before GenX ever had a chance to prove itself: dismissing GenX out of the gate. We got called “slackers” before that call could ever be legitimately made and people like this one have clung to that notion ever since, cherry-picking facts and data to support their prejudice. Boomers are having trouble with GenX leaders because they want to cling to power and their own ways. Millennials are having trouble because they’re impatient to be in charge. GenZs are generally still too young to truly have a clue. Roll the clock back and Boomers used to be where GenX is, looked down on by Silents as “hippies”. This isn’t a function of generational “traits” that are about as over-generalized as horoscopes and fortune cookie wisdom; this is a function of aging and succession. And this guy is the worst kind of business fad: a consultant, the majority of whom are parasites hired by managers to “fix” problems that are often the result of poor leadership. And fascinatingly a consultant never comes in and says that there isn’t a problem, or that the problem is the management that hired them - they want to get paid. But if you’ve been around as long as I have you will recognize the stink of what they’re peddling as a repackaging of an older idea from a generation prior. I’ve watched this B.S. play out in the military, business and academia. It’s all the same. Stop trying to manage from meetings and get out among your people. Keep meetings concise and focused.

I wasn't going to comment on this asinine video but since you feel you need to explain why my generation ruins corporate America... you asked for it. What you are describing is something the Baby Boomer generation needs for themselves and it was forced on Gen X'rs... like everything else in our childhoods. We don't do it because we don't need it. Our expectation for you, Millenials and Gen Zrs is that you show up and do the job we pay you to do. Need a hug for validation? Get one from your mom. Why should we invest our time in you, when you don't invest your time in your careers? You all move around every few years or quit because you don't like being treated like the adults you should be.

This is less of a generational issue than it is an American cultural issue, this fragility and neediness for external validation and constant acknowledgment. Go work in Germany or one of the Nordic countries, whose companies are known to provide generally higher quality products and services than American ones, and that also have higher employee satisfaction and retention. Their management style is exactly how Marston characterized GenX. People are self-motivated, pride themselves on thinking independently, are expected to do their jobs without hand-holding and constant affirmation, and expect that their performance is satisfactory unless informed otherwise. They work to live, they do not live to work, and they maintain very clear boundaries between the two. They do their work diligently and efficiently and go home when they're done. They find it inappropriate to try and make everything personal, and are creeped out and feel put on the spot by fellow employees assuming personal familiarity without an actual personal relationship. This American tactic of putting work in the context of being a "family", and being a "team" is a disingenuous manipulation tactic, one that cults employ heavily; it's nauseating, it erodes and blurs the boundaries of the work/life balance, and it impairs the efficiency and quality of a company.

Gen X had to figure things out, I suppose we think that if you don't know... you'll figure it out. I mean with Google, youtube, chat gpt, there's not much you can't figure out "before" you ask for help. As a Gen X parent, this is a constant in our house, when the kids need help with something, I first ask them what they have done or tried before helping them, and then I ask them to walk me through the steps or options they have tried, then once I see what they have attempted, I can better offer what else needs to be done or a direction that wasn't thought of. The same goes for employees, far too often companies are hiring employees, nowadays, who don't know what to do, they might have a degree, but they don't know anything, or how to problem solve... but they are great at asking for help, and by help, I mean they seem to be looking for is for someone else to do their job.
